What Is Involved:
These services are important as they help to ensure that your electrical system is running efficiently and safely. At Charter Electrical, we have experienced electricians who provide high-quality mains power upgrade and repair services to ensure that your electrical system meets the required safety standards.
Site Assessment - We come to your home and assess the existing installation specifically the currently installed consumer mains, the method of installation ie. Overhead or Underground mains. The safety equipment in the main switchboard and the main earthing system.

Supply offer and method of connection - A supply offer needs to be obtained from the power authority in your area (Citipower, Jemena, Powercor Australia, AusNet Services, United Energy Distribution) ensuring there is sufficient supply available for you in your street. If there isn't sufficient power you may enter into an agreement to upgrade the street or install a substation on site. The power authority may do an inspection of the property to determine the method of connection they want to use for the property. Due to updated SIR regulations, regardless of the existing connection a different method may need to be used to meet regulations. Eg. if the current overhead connection can not meet required height over a driveway/road or the path of the cable will cross the property boundary over another property an underground connection may be required instead. This is to the deaccession of the supply authority on inspection or connection and the installation may be knocked back on a defect if works have not been completed to SIR regulations.

Common Installation Upgrades - The obvious upgrade is the incoming mains which will need to be replaced with new cabling. If an overhead connection is requested the Fused mains box needs replacing and if an underground connection then conduit must be run to a pit on the property boundary.

Switchboard and meter enclosure upgrades are common with most mains upgrades and are a necessity for an upgrade from single phase to 3 phase power. The switchboard housing may be able to remain but the switchboard and switchgear all gets replaced
Earthing system upgrade is required to comply with the AS/NZS 3000 regulations and a new earth cable may be installed along with a new earth electrode to meet the regulations.
Electrical inspector - An independent electrical inspector needs to certify the installation satisfies the AS/NZS 3000 regulations and certifies this in person then on the Prescribed Electrical Certificate

The Paperwork - The completed Prescribed Electrical Certificate of Safety and Electrical Work Request is then issued by Charter Electrical to the customer for them to submit to the electrical retailer of their choice eg. AGL, Alinta Energy, Lumo Energy, Origin Energy, Red Energy, Simply Energy and so on.

The Retailer - Contact the retailer of your choice and they will step you through the remaining connection process

Power Authority Connection - The power authority will attend your site, install a new electrical meter and connect the power to the premise.

Turn it on! - Once the meter says it is connected we can turn on the main switch and energies the premise!
